Helen Tufts Child
Outreach Program
About Us
The Helen Tufts Child Outreach Program provides opportunities for Queen’s students to volunteer and get involved with children in the Kingston community, some of whom come from varied backgrounds that are disenfranchised from opportunities like this. Queen’s students are paired with a buddy between the ages of 6 and 13 to practice literacy skills and participate in engaging group activities. Helen Tufts volunteers have the opportunity to connect with children in a one-on-one setting, spend time with like-minded students, and gain volunteer experience. This program is free for the children and transportation to The Spire is available for those who need it.
The running of this program is a group effort. An experienced volunteer is involved with recruitment and training of the student volunteers; Queen’s Alma Mater Society (AMS) provides an annual grant from student activity fees that covers transportation costs; and the congregation of Sydenham Street United Church donates gifts of space and volunteer support from their membership.
